Festivities of Our Lady of Carmel

The festivities in honour of Our Lady of Carmel, held in mid-July, are the main ones held in the municipality of Puerto de la Cruz. Thousands of people flock to the fishing pier to see Our Lady arrive, whose throne is carried by the fishermen to one of the boats that then set off on a procession across the waters.

Carnival

Jubilation and colours flood the streets and you’ll feel like the star of a huge improvised show. Nothing will stop you from enjoying what you’ve been waiting a whole year for: Carnival. The island’s most iconic fiesta has been filling Tenerife with rhythm, glitter and debauchery for centuries.

Corpus Christi – La Orotava

Although its origins date back to years beforehand, the feast of Corpus Christi was established by the Pope in 1264 to honour the body and blood of Christ present in the Eucharist.

It has been celebrated in La Orotava ever since the town was founded. It gained fame here after the seventeenth century, when locals began to make carpets of flowers to receive the procession. Over time, the carpets have become a hugely important artistic element for the festivities. Nowadays, volcanic sand of different shades is used alongside flowers to create stunning tapestries.

The Corpus Christi is celebrated sixty days after Easter Sunday, always on the Thursday after the Holy Trinity.

It takes place on the island on 2 February, although celebrations are also held throughout the Canary Islands on 15 August, as this was the day when she first appeared. On the night of 14 August, pilgrimage walks set off from across the island to the basilica in Candelaria, with acts of a fundamentally religious nature being performed.
